LPPM UNS as a research-based institute is obliged to (1) produce quality human resources that can run the national development system and infrastructure; (2) develop a research culture and apply science, technology, and art capable of creating maximum added value to achieve the welfare of the Indonesian people and nation; and (3) Manage information on research and development of science, technology, and art, which is strategically needed to support the national economy and development, including designing research programs and agendas and implementing program management, managing intellectual protection rights, managing marketing and disseminating technology, and managing interaction networks with various parties.

Objectives

LPPM UNS aims to provide and equip researchers and community service agents in various competencies (cognitive, psychomotor, affective), which are expected to meet the internal and external needs and standards of the world of industry, society, and the world of work. The missions of LPPM UNS as its objectives are elaborated as follows.

  1. An active role in the development and utilization of science, technology, and art in research and community service.
  2. The realization of internal and external research collaborations.
  3. The realization of excellent products from research and community empowerment.
  4. The generation of intellectual property (IP) acquisition for research and community empowerment results in the context of IP protection.
  5. The realization of independence and synergy of the Institute and its centers.
  6. The realization of the participation of lecturers and students in research and empowerment of the community.
  7. The creation of good image and reputation.

Basic Programs

To realize the vision, missions, and objectives above, LPPM establishes a basic research program as follows:

  1. Increasing productivity and quality of research processes, results, and outputs.
  2. Increasing intellectual property (IP) acquisition capability
  3. Developing of effective partnerships and collaborations in the field of research.
  4. Conducting research by referring to the eight (8) criteria for national research standards, namely standards of result, content, process, assessment, implementation, facility and infrastructure, management, and funding.
  5. Developing the level of readiness or maturity of the resulting output. Maturity of research output in the UNS environment refers to the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) level 1-9 and the Innovation Readiness Level (Katsinov) level 1-6.
  6. Developing internal reviewers to select proposals following the provisions set by the Research and Community Service Directory (RCSD). Internal reviewers must meet a number of requirements.
  7. Developing and implementing Sustainable Internal Quality Assurance System (SIQAS).
  8. Realizing LPPM as a data center related to R&CS activities at UNS.

Main Policies and Programs

To support the basic programs above, LPPM has established the following main policies and programs:

1. Policies to achieve productivity and quality of results and outputs

  • Development of research roadmap.
  • Disbursement of UNS competitive research incentives.
  • Improvement of the competence of researchers in obtaining research funds.
  • Improvement of the competence of researchers in the publication of results.
  • Development of UNS internal and external networks.

2. Policies for the acquisition of intellectual property (IP)

  • Improvement of the competence of lecturers and students to produce innovation and creation.
  • Disbursement of UNS excellent design and innovation incentives.
  • Improvement of competence for intellectual property (IP) acquisition based on local culture and innovation.

3. Policies to expand effective partnerships and collaborations in the field of research.

  • Development of effective partnerships and collaborations to market UNS innovations/excellences.
  • Development of an integrated revenue-generating unit in the marketing of UNS innovation/excellence.
  • Application of Research and Development (R&D) results of Thematic and Partnership Community Service to produce Intellectual Property (IP) and effective collaboration to market UNS innovations/excellences.

4. Policy Development of the level of readiness or maturity of the resulting research output.

The maturity of the research output can refer to the TRL with a scale of 1-9. In addition to TRL, Katsinov is also introduced, which is a tool for measuring, assessing and determining innovation products that can be applied in the management of innovation processes or innovation management in higher education institutions and R&D institutions organized in six levels and seven key aspects covering technology, market, organization, partnerships, risk, manufacture, and investment.

  • Katsinov 1 is a concept in which the basic scientific principles of the innovation are observed and reported, and the critical functions and/or characteristics are confirmed by experiment.
  • Katsinov 2 is a component that has been developed and validated, and a prototype has been developed to demonstrate the technology.
  • Katsinov 3 is a completed phase, in other words technology development has been completed, and all system functions have been proven in the field.
  • Katsinov 4 is a chasm. At this level, the initial stage of introducing the innovation results to the market has been carried out. Examples of innovative products at this level are Gesits electric motorcycle, the Flat Plate Ship, and the Red and White Catalyst.
  • Katsinov 5 is a competition which is a market maturity phase when a market equilibrium is reached.
  • Katsinov 6 refers to a phase of moving (changeover) or stopping (closedown) production. At this stage, there is a market decline which poses two options, namely moving with technological reinnovations or stopping because of the innovation being considered as obsolete or the innovator(s) deciding to quit.

Basic Services and Research Development

LPPM UNS consistently implements the values of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (three pillars of Indonesian higher education) to develop knowledge with various research services:
