The Application of Growth Promoted Concentrate for Fattening Simental Cow of Feedlot System and Solid and Liquid Organic Manure Production through the Implementation of Working Class of Business to the Farmer Group “Sambi Mulyo” Sambi subdistrict, Boyolali Regency

Most of beef cattle farms in Indonesia represent popular animal husbandries, yet they contribute around 80-90 percent of national beef production. Boyolali regency is a potential producer of beef cattle, including those of Simmental cows. Sambi subdistrict comprises one area having numerous beef cattle farmers. Animal Husbandry Department of Sebelas Maret University intended to produce graduates who are competent in the field of stock breeding and entrepreneurship, including beef cattle fattening. It is, therefore, requires efforts to increase knowledge and competence as a potential entrepreneur in the field of beef cattle fattening through direct activities at the breeders. This objective is expected to be achieved through the implementation Working Class of Business program. The WCB program of Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRCS) of the National Education Ministry has been implemented in “Sambi Mulyo” farmer group in Sambi subdistrict, Boyolali regency during the period of January-November 2009. This group consisted of 25 members with a total of 60 Simmental cows. Feedlot system of fattening is conducted for 120 days per period. In addition to the improvement of entrepreneurship and soft skill of the students in the field of beef cattle fattening, WCB program was also aimed at developing business plan and increasing the productivity of beef cattle fattening at the level of farmer group. It is implemented by improving the management of fodder, cage, processing and production of organic fertilizer, either in solid or liquid form, and analysis of business and marketing. Furthermore, the WCB program was intended to foster the culture of university research application commercially and continually, to develop local human resources, to move higher education institutions closer to the business of people’s animal husbandry, to provide employment in local areas, and to increase the farmers’ income. The outputs of WCB program are final report of activities, business plan report of beef cattle fattening of Simmental, the marketing of fattened quality beef cattle fed with fermented straws and growth-pacer concentrate supplement made from local fodder, the production of solid and liquid organic fertilizers madder from cow feces and urine, respectively, as the additional income, and continual and wastesless Simmental cattle fattening enterprise. The current research concludes that students gain direct experience in developing business plan for feedlot system of cattle beef fattening; WCB team obtains applicable course material; relationship was established between UNS and Sambi Mulyo farmer group; increased farmer income and improved management of feedlot system of cattle beef fattening (conducted for 120 days, resulting in 476,7 kg of final weight (410 – 525 kg) from the initial weight of 413,6kg (349,7 – 466,7 kg), weight increase of 63 kg (58,4 – 72,4kg) and daily weight increase of 1,1 kg (1,0 – 1,3 kg/day); and the net profit amounting to Rp. 1.187.750/cow/month and B/C = 1,5 and R/C = 0,5. To maintain the business continuity “Sambi Mulyo” feedlot business as the profit center for the farmer group, it is recommended to continue the technical advocacy of feedlot system of cattle beef fattening, especially on the aspects of marketing, capital empowerment, and sustainable business development cooperation.
